Image (c) www.architizer.com

The Medford city council in Oregon, USA (where else?) has recently given its seal of approval for vast banner adverts to be placed on all sides of the airport’s air traffic control tower.

Good, I mean airports are SO non-commercial, right?

This isn’t actually as mercenary as it sounds. They are hoping to pull in up to USD 3000 a month for the 7.5 x 7.5 m signs and use the profits to pay for some of the airport costs.

Well that’s nice for them then.

Not so fast – the plan is to reduce landing fees, thus making Medford more appealing to new airlines and routes.

So is the beginning of the end for advert-free towers?

I’m rather hoping it won’t ‘take off’ as an idea.

I see what you did there…

I mean, what with seat-back adverts, in-flight magazines chock-full of commercials and the barrage of billboards greeting passengers as they step from the plane, do we really need to be faced with a gigantic, Photoshop-enhanced pouting fashion model 30 metres up a control tower as we descend through the clouds?

Oh and by the way, as to “why did nobody think of that before?” – because it’s a stupid idea…

What do you think? Would you prefer your airports to retain ad-free air traffic control towers? Post your thoughts below.

So far we’ve been shared tips on London, Stockholm, Copenhagen, Berlin and Oslo and as mentioned we’ve lined up posts on Amsterdam, Chicago and New York. But before then we figured we may as well capitalize on our recent trip to Paris…

Ooh la la! And how was the City of Light?

Rather like New York it’s one of those places that actually manages to live up to the hype. Not only is it bursting with renowned iconic sights such as the Eiffel Tower and newer stars like La Grande Arche, you’d have to go out of your way to find a bad restaurant. Indeed I could easily have filled this article with places to eat, but managed to restrict it to two out of five…

5 things in Paris your friends won’t have experienced *

* er, let’s say there’s an above-average chance that they won’t have experienced all of them, okay?

Eric Kayser

Image (c) shescookin.com

Everyone who goes to Paris expects to sample pain au chocolat and a croissant or five, but rather then any old bakery why not visit one of the many branches of Eric Kayser where Parisians will queue for their daily fix come rain or come shine? You can pop in for breakfast (either one from the set menu or one you put together yourself) and if you’re very lucky you’ll be able to snag a table and enjoy some of Paris’s best coffee to accompany your petit dejeuner. Or alternatively you can grab something to go; from a mouth-watering baguette (a meal in itself) to a sweet treat you’ll be spoiled for choice.

Image (c) Banzai Hiroaki

Eric and his friends pride themselves on the quality of the ‘leaven’ used in baking – this is the liquid mixture of water and flour which ferments and causes the bread to rise. It also produces the flavour; and you’ll notice the difference here. There are branches all over Paris with different opening days (pay particular attention to which day of the week they are closed) and the website (with English version) provides full details. Don’t leave the French capital without trying something from Eric Kayser – it’ll take you a while to work your way through the 50 varieties of cakes too. Oh and yes, people do wander round Paris with baguettes under their arms, but we conspicuously failed to spot anyone in a stripy jumper with a beret, a string of onions round their neck riding a bicycle.
La Pétillante sparkling water fountain

Image (c) Eau de Paris

One of the first products I associated with France was Perrier, mainly due to extensive advertising on UK TV in the seventies. The French have always been fans of bottled water, something that has clearly irritated the water companies who are proud of the quality of their tap water. Whilst you will have to forego the funky pear-shaped bottle of the aforementioned brand you can now fill your own with sparkling Eau de Paris water at a public fountain in the Jardin de Reuilly.

Image (c) Eau de Paris

Yes that’s right, sparkling water – chilled to perfection. Not content with having over 800 drinking water fountains, Parisians can now forego buying the fizzy stuff and fill up for free. This is a good idea – France consumes a lot of bottled water, each person glugged down around 28 gallons of still or sparkling water in 2009 which resulted in an estimated 262,000 tonnes of plastic waste. Based on a concept from Italy – where there are now over 200 sparkling water fountains – the hope is to get Parisians to drink tap water again and reduce the environmental impact of all those bottles. The Italian version has already been dubbed a success and is believed to have saved 50 tonnes of CO2 and 400kg of carbon monoxide, which is worth celebrating with a glass of bubbly (water).

The Nagasaki Angel

The Paris Headquarters of UNESCO, the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization, has a wealth of paintings and sculptures on display in the Y-shaped building near the Eiffel Tower. But less well-known is the tranquil Japanese water garden known as the Garden of Peace. Quite apart from the beauty of the place it is also home to one of Paris’ more unusual sights – the Nagasaki Angel. On 6 August 1945, the first atomic bomb was dropped on Hiroshima, flattening the city and leaving 130,000 people dead. Three days later, another B-29 dropped an even more powerful atomic bomb on Nagasaki which essentially vaporized the place.

Image (c) eyepreferparis.net

In the suburbs of Nagasaki the largest Roman Catholic church in Japan in Urakami was completely destroyed but when survivors searched the ruins they found part of a sculptured angel that had survived. Her torso was gone but her head and wings remained intact, providing a much-needed symbol of hope to the locals. Her face was still recognizable but the bomb had damaged one eye; at first glance it looks like she had been crying. The Nagasaki Angel was a gift to UNESCO from the city in 1976 to celebrate the Organization’s 30th anniversary.

Wine tasting

Image (c) Travelmuse.com

Where better to learn about wine than Paris? Italians might have something to say here, but anyway; when in the French capital you are going to be drinking the stuff – why not become a little more au fait with all it has to offer? Marketing itself as a ‘cool wine tasting company’, Ô Château’s owner Olivier Magny is quick to explain that its doors are open to all. One of the main aims was to reduce the snobbery that can be associated with the wine world and he certainly appears to have succeeded.

Image (c) luxedaily.fr

There are some 40 different wines for tasting by the glass, and you will even have the opportunity to sample several extremely rare and expensive bottles in understandably smaller quantities. This is due to some fancy high-tech devices enabling wine to be kept fresh for longer. This may just be your only chance to sample Chateau Petrus without re-mortgaging your house. For those wanting to learn more, there are three sessions a day in the more intimate tasting rooms. As you can see from the photos here the premises themselves are beautifully appointed. The last time we checked there were five different tastings on offer and you’ll need to book in advance. By the way, all tastings are held in English so the language barrier should not get in the way of your grape-based enjoyment.

La Cerisaie

Image (c) e-hoosta.com

Finally we had to share this place with you. From the outside it looks rather ordinary, a tiny place with a red front that you would probably walk right past even when hungry. Peering inside you’ll see only a handful of tables and minimal decoration – but this should be interpreted as a clue to the focus on one thing – the food. The menu changes daily and is written on blackboards on the walls; there are also specials each day. The Chef, Cyril Lalanne, uses only the finest produce and conjures up a mouth-watering range of dishes.

Image (c) Time Out Paris

On our visit we had duck pie as a starter, pork as a main course (but this is no ordinary pig – rather the cochon noir de Bigorre, an ancient breed with a fantastic flavour) and a variation on rum cake called Baba a’l'armagnac, which has to be eaten to be believed. Service is excellent, the staff are as passionate about wine as food and their recommendations can safely be followed. Given the size of the place you’ll have to call and make a reservation- English is spoken both on the phone and in the restaurant so don’t hesitate to make that call. Without a doubt the culinary highlight of a long weekend in Paris – and a restaurant to which we will definitely return.

Now we’re back on home turf, more or less. But I thought you didn’t like the Norwegian capital?

It’s true that I’m no fan of Oslo, and would never put the city in the same league as Stockholm or Copenhagen, but if you know where to look (or read this site) you can find enough interesting diversions for a fun weekend. So without further ado let’s give you some tips…

5 things in Oslo your friends won’t have heard about *

* well, it’s at least fairly unlikely that they have.

Pur Norsk

Image (c) Pur Norsk

Cynics may wonder if there are enough products designed in Norway to fill a shop, but cynics would be wrong. As the only store in the country to exclusively focus on Norwegian design (hence the name, which translates as ‘Pure Norwegian’) Pur Norsk is packed with everything from kitchen utensils to furniture. The perfect place for a Norwegian souvenir with a difference and to suit any budget; the most popular items for visitors are Røros blankets, cutlery and other kitchen equipment.

Image (c) Pur Norsk

It’s almost like visiting a gallery or museum to learn more about the diversity of design, and is well worth a visit whether you plan to buy or just to browse. The shop’s owners, Marianne Lien and Lasse Altern Halvorsen can provide all the background information you need about any product they stock. Pur Norsk was voted one of the 5 best interior stores by the British magazine Monocle.

Pur Norsk – Theresesgate 14, 0452 Oslo. Open Monday-Friday 1100-1800, Saturday 1000-1600.

Tram to Adamstuen or Stensgata. http://www.purnorsk.no/

Frognerbadet

Image (c) Bevegelser.no

When the sun is shining and the air is warm, Oslo has a whole new appeal. In the height of summer it can get seriously hot in the city and your options for cooling off include heading to the waterfront or joining the locals at Frognerbadet outdoor pool. I’m not suggesting you have to attempt what that guy above is doing in the photo but you will doubtless enjoy the facilities. Or why not join the earlybirds who are to be found queueing up at quarter to six each morning for that perfect start to the day? A favourite for Oslo residents and visitors since it opened in 1956, Frognerbadet’s biggest draw is perhaps its location, surrounded by grass lawns and with a clear view of the Vigeland Sculpture Park.

There’s something for everyone here, with water slides and a range of diving boards right up to 10 metres (see picture). Chill out with an ice cream and/or a hot dog afterwards and catch some rays, just don’t forget the suncream – you’ll burn fast if you’re not careful. You can buy swimming gear at the pool if you forgot to bring your own.

Kaffefuglen

Image obtained from Flickr.com under Creative Commons (c) gimme! coffee

It’s an oft-repeated (but nevertheless true) fact that Norwegians drink more coffee than anyone else on the planet – some ten billion cups a year or a staggering 10 a day. There is no shortage of places to buy a dose of caffeine in the Norwegian capital but Kaffefuglen is arguably the most stylish – the style in question being that of the 1960s. As with the Stockholm cafe String, you can also buy anything you see inside from the cups to the furniture, should you so desire.

Image (c) Kaffefuglen

In the evenings from Thursday to Saturday you can also get something stronger than coffee when ‘Fuglen’ serves up cocktails. And they’re not just playing at being a bar either – their own creation won a Norwegian cocktail competition last year. The success of the establishment has led to the opening of another branch, but in Tokyo rather than Trondheim. A bold move, but not half as bold as the fact that Fuglen will be selling Norwegian sake from the Nøgne Ø craft brewery. Yes, in Japan. Oh and in case you were wondering the name means ‘coffee bird’.

Kaffefuglen, Universitetsgaten 2, 0164 Oslo. Open (day) Monday-Friday 0730-1800, Saturday, Sunday 1200-1800 (night) Thursday-Saturday 2000-0030

Emanuel Vigelands Museum

Image (c) Leif Riksheim BONO Emanuel Vigelands Museum

On the few occasions that anything is actually written about this place, it almost always includes the words, ‘Oslo’s best-kept secret’. There is still a great deal of truth in this and when people talk of Vigeland it is usually about Emanuel’s older brother Gustav (he of the statues in Vigeland Park). Even those living in the neighbourhood seem unaware of the museum, but you should make the effort to take a look. It is actually a mausoleum and intentionally offers a different kind of experience.

Image (c) aktivioslo.no

It’s dark and foreboding and your footsteps echo for 20 seconds due to the amazing resonance inside – a fact which has not gone unnoticed by musicians. Several artists have both played gigs and recorded tracks in the burial chamber. The frescoes adorning the walls are atmospherically lit and a visit here is not like standing in line at the Louvre. You’ll have to get here on a Sunday as it’s closed the rest of the week which in fact makes it a perfect addition to your weekend itinerary – Sunday is a quiet day in Oslo.

Emanuel Vigeland Museum, Grimelundsveien 8, Slemdal Open Sunday only: 12.00-17.00. (15 May – 15 September) 12.00-16.00 (16 September – 14 May)

Sune Sports and Games

Image (c) misterearlmusing.blogspot.com

Well, I promised you something unusual, and this place definitely ticks the boxes. It’s a shop open two hours a week (on Tuesday afternoons) run by former frisbee world champion Sune Wentzel, and it’s devoted to the sport of frisbee golf. By ‘devoted to’ think over 1000 different types of frisbee. You may not be familiar with the game but there are in fact more than 40 places to play in Norway alone and the man himself reckons frisbee is the fifth largest competitive sport on earth. That includes all the different types of frsibee game including (ahem) playing with yourself. Which is known as Self-Caught Flight, by the way.

Image obtained from Flickr.com under Creative Commons (c) Asbjørn-Floden

Instead of whacking a ball into a hole the aim is to float your frisbee into a metal net – and there’s way less snobbery than for regular golf. Having said that, you can clearly get involved in equipment envy if the sheer variety of products on sale in his store on the outskirts of Oslo is any guide. If you can’t make it during the brief window of opening Sune has an extensive online store where you can find anything you could possibly need (and plenty you didn’t know you needed) for ‘park and recreational activities’. Sounds great for larking around on the lawns of Vigeland Park after your early morning swim at Frognerbadet.

Sune Sports and Games, Østre Akers vei 203, 0975 Oslo. Open Tuesday afternoons only, contact store via website for details.

T-bane to Rødtvet, Train to Nyland. http://www.sunesport.no/

Let’s face it, the German capital has more to offer than the cold war, clubbing and currywurst you know. It’s one of a shrinking number of major cities with a wide range of unusual and specialist shops, which means you are spoilt for choice when looking for something different to bring home as a souvenir. We’ve put together this list to highlight 6 shops we think are great and to demonstrate the diversity of goods on sale. So next time you’re in Berlin there really is NO excuse for settling on the Ampelmann t-shirt or the bear beer mug…

When you want to buy your clothes like you buy your fruit and veg – Garage

Image (c) berlin.unlike

By which I mean by weight. Yes, Garage is still going strong (I was often here back in 1992) doing what it does best – selling second-hand clothes by the kilo. When I last did the research (admittedly a few years ago) Garage was the largest second-hand clothes store in Europe and it has a good range of jackets, coats and jeans. Collect what you want then proceed to the checkout to have your bounty weighed and priced. This rather baffling method of valuing textiles generally works in your favour and you’ll certainly find items here you’ll not find elsewhere.

Opening hours Monday to Friday 11-19, Saturday 11-18

http://www.kleidermarkt.de/html/fil-ber-ahorn.html

When you want to create your own perfume – Harry Lehman

Image obtained from Flickr.com under Creative Commons (c) fortune cookie

You can’t get much more personal than a perfume you created yourself, which is where Harry can help. In his Charlottenburg store he has over 50 different fragrances (including, of course, “Berlin”) which you can blend to your heart’s desire and take home with you. I can’t promise you’ll produce the next Chanel no. 5 (Chanel no. 6?) but it’s well worth a try for the few Euros it’ll cost you. And it certainly makes for a unique and dare I say romantic gift from your visit.

When you want to equip yourself for moving on – Globetrotter

Image (c) Globetrotter

Okay, outdoor stores are not that unusual but this place is huge and boasts a few cool features – including a freezer room where you can test how warm those jackets and sleeping bags really are. Well, I did say cool…not only that, it also has a pool where you can actually try out their kayaks. The expertise is as good as you would expect and prices are reasonable. No matter where you are off to after Berlin, you’ll be able to get the right kit here.

When you want to bring out your inner Jamie Oliver – Kuchenladen

Image (c) edelight.de

A veritable treasure trove of quality kitchen equipment, this Charlottenburg institution is perfect for would-be chefs but also worth visiting if you want to buy gifts for your hosts in Berlin or friends back home. They stock most of the major brands as well as more unusual items, and as is the case with most smaller shops the staff have a passion for their work and know what they’re talking about.

When you’re not prepared to give up on vinyl - Mr Dead and Mrs Free

If you’re one of the growing number of people determined to keep (and use) your vinyl record collection, or if you are looking for that special disc for that special someone who is similarly anti-CD, this is the shop for you. They’ve been going for years and appear to be doing better than ever, offering a wide range of music but with an emphasis on rock, punk and indie. A good place to meet people with similar taste too, and to find out about gigs and clubs in Berlin. Also good for browsing and reminiscing on the old days before Amazon et. al. And to relive that record store smell…
