Once the scene of a great deal of East-West Cold War tension (including the murder of a guard) you are now free to visit the memorial which stands in former West Berlin, right near the Brandenburg Gate. No longer guarded round the clock if your language skills are up to it you can even get close enough to read the inscriptions
