News: London’s most fabulous ice rink is now open

Hurra! The ice rink at Somerset House has just opened for the winter season, and you can now show off your skills/notch up some ace new bruises (delete as appropriate) on the 900 square metres of ice.

Enough room for everyone, huh?

Well in theory but this is rink is a little more popular than Streatham. You need to book in advance for a session so get a move on if you have a specific date in mind. Check out this great promo courtesy of the official Somerset House website:

I guess the Chrimbo tree is up already too?

Yup, as before Tiffany’s is in charge of the decorations so it should be pretty snazzy. Even if it IS a bit early…

Do they expect people to bring skates?

If you happen to have a pair in your suitcase on a trip to the big British smoke then that’s all fine and dandy, but of course you can hire them there.

Do they expect people to be skaters?

No, and what a place to learn! There is a skating school with lessons for absolute beginners like me and you and there are also special sessions for children and the disabled. There will also be late-night skating and club nights (from Thursday to Saturday) with music from DJs. And get this: there will also be Big Ice Dance workouts, under the auspices of the English National Ballet no less. That should get the blood flowing before you join your ice dance lesson.

Steady on now. Maybe next year…and what about us non-skaters?

Plenty of other activities and the place itself is always worth a visit. It’s even more magical at this time of year too. There’ll be story-telling by the tree, there’s a rinkside bar open to all as well as Tiffany’s shop with edible goodies as well as all sorts of stylish knick-knacks.
