How To Stay Safe On The Beach

A relaxing beach holiday is a great way to unwind on that well-earned vacation time. But a good holiday is a safe holiday so here are a few tips for beach safety.

Choose a beach with a lifeguard – if you’re planning to swim, it’s a good idea to choose a beach that has a lifeguard during peak times. Lifeguards are also trained in first aid.

Learn to recognise flags – UK beaches often have flags on them which warn you of danger and what you should and shouldn’t do. Colour of flags are usually red, yellow, chequered and red.

Stay sun safe – it’s easy to underestimate the strength of the sun at the beach. The sea breeze can make it seem colder than it actually is and getting in and out of the water can wash off your sunscreen.

Exposure to the sun is one of the leading causes of skin cancer, so you should have adequate SPF at all times.

Reapply sunscreen as often as is necessary and stay in the shade during the hottest times of the day.

Only swim in safe conditions – you should only swim when the flags tell you it is safe to do so and there is a lifeguard on the beach.

Did you know that most people, given the choice, prefer to swim in a pool, rather than the ocean? In a survey by hoo, they asked a number of people which they preferred and why.

They’ve created this handy little infographic about it too.

I know what it's like to go from being a crazy backpacker without a care in the world, via being a vaguely sensible parent to being an adventurer once more. In other words, evolving into a Grown-up Traveller.

Like everyone else, I love to travel, have visited a lot of countries and all that but my big thing is Africa.

I also own and run The Grown-up Travel Company as a travel designer creating personalised African itineraries for experienced adventurers
