Physically Preparing for Your Next Adventure

There are as many different kinds of trips as there are people. If you love to shop, going to a shopping destination and spending your days between stores in trendy cafes and your hotel room is ideal. If you love to explore history, walking the streets is perfect, but for those who want to get out and experience the world in a whole new way, trips stop being a relaxing experience and start to become something more physically challenging. Whether you are hiking or aiming to explore as much as you can, you want your body to keep up with you every step of the way:

Start by Getting More Active

Travelling is a very physically demanding activity, because though you will use transport, most of the time you will be exploring on foot, either with belongings, a day pack, or shopping. It is for this reason that you should start to become more active in your daily life as soon as possible. Go for walks, take the stairs, bike to work – all of these will help prepare you for more strenuous exercises needed to trek through countries comfortably.

Flexibility and Strength

When it is time to start training, you will likely want to focus primarily on stamina, but you also need to remember how important strength and flexibility will be to your journey as well, especially if you are interested in extreme sports. Carrying a backpack with you when hiking will get tiring, and the last thing that you want is for your muscles to lock up due to being overexerted. Work on your stamina, work on your strength, and aim to be more flexible so that your body can keep going.

Healthy Eating

Though it is more difficult to eat healthy on the road, it is not impossible. First, however, you should aim to update your diet so that your body gets all the nutrients that it needs. Our bodies like to stay in the state that they are in, which is why any change to our lifestyle is often met with resistance. By changing our diets beforehand, we can actually keep ourselves on the right track, simply because instead of craving greasy food whenever we pass it by, we will crave something that provides our bodies with the nutrients that they need.

Doctor Check-Up

You should always get a check-up before you go on a long trip, especially if that trip has a certain disease you should become vaccinated against before you leave. To ensure you get the best service, find a doctor who works with Insight Medical Partners. They work with practitioners to ensure that patients get the best care at the fairest price – perfect for when you are saving all that you can to spend on your trip.

Travel is a fun experience, but you should never underestimate how physically challenging it can be. By training for your trip beforehand you can make the most of your trip, instead of feeling tired and trying to catch up on rest.

I know what it's like to go from being a crazy backpacker without a care in the world, via being a vaguely sensible parent to being an adventurer once more. In other words, evolving into a Grown-up Traveller.

Like everyone else, I love to travel, have visited a lot of countries and all that but my big thing is Africa.

I also own and run The Grown-up Travel Company as a travel designer creating personalised African itineraries for experienced adventurers
