There are few better investments for a relationship than a trip away from home – be it for a night, a weekend or a little longer. Time alone with your partner away from the stresses of everyday life is hard to measure in monetary terms, but I’d hazard a guess that it beats flowers, chocolates or theatre tickets.

We’ve touched on romantic destinations before, but when all is said and done it’s not the location that matters, it’s the effort you put into it to make it magical.

There’s no point travelling to Paris or Rome if you just end up arguing the whole time – you can just as easily bicker at home and save your money.

In truth it doesn’t take a lot of effort to have a good time – make sure you both are on the same wavelength about what you plan to do; whether it be sightseeing or just plain relaxing.

Listen to one another and compromise on your schedule, while allowing plenty of time to just take it easy and enjoy the new surroundings.

It’s no fun being exhausted the whole time either – which is why a short-haul destination beats a 9-hour flight, time difference and jetlag. Thailand for a long weekend may sound like a dream but is more likely to turn into an expensive nightmare.

Right, so you’ve agreed on the place and worked out a plan of how to spend your time. Plot in a few wonderful restaurants and make those reservation in good time so you don’t end up getting turned away and having to eat fast food instead of haute cuisine.

If you’ll be visiting a lot of sights it may be worth investing in a city pass to save both time and money – often these allow you to skip the lines or use a fast pass entrance.

When it comes to packing, you can spice things up a bit here too. Given that you’ll likely be spending a fair amount of time in a hotel room, I have a few ideas for you to make it more fun. Our friends at 3Wishes sell a huge range of lingerie and costumes that can really spice things up.

There’s a selection for men, too, so there’s no excuse for the guys not to get involved, either!

Instead of those decidedly unflattering, heavy and hot towelling robes provided by some hotels, why not slip into something a little more comfortable and a lot more attractive?

I’m sure you’ll have a great time – and if you follow our suggestions it should be even better. Enjoy!

I know what it's like to go from being a crazy backpacker without a care in the world, via being a vaguely sensible parent to being an adventurer once more. In other words, evolving into a Grown-up Traveller.

Like everyone else, I love to travel, have visited a lot of countries and all that but my big thing is Africa.

I also own and run The Grown-up Travel Company as a travel designer creating personalised African itineraries for experienced adventurers
