Top Benefits of Travelling Abroad

There is nothing quite like planning a holiday abroad, sailing the waters in the Caribbean, or buying the boots that will help you trek through Machu Picchu in Peru, curling your toes in the Fijian sand as you watch the sun go down. All of these things are generally tending to be bucket list items because vacations are not cheap.

Going on holiday is expensive, but travelling abroad is one of those things that you absolutely have to do at some point in life. Not to sound maudlin, but we are all going to die and if you get to 70 years old having never seen outside of your street or the four walls of your hometown, you’re going to regret it.

There is an entire world out there that you have an opportunity to learn and explore and if you don’t take the chance to do it you will feel like you are missing out. Whether you decide to go on an Adult Only Resorts holiday without the kids, or you decide to trek up Everest one day, you need to travel abroad for the experience. There is an adrenaline rush in booking that holiday abroad and boarding that plane.

If you’ve never been on a plane before, getting up into the sky can feel impossible. But you’re doing it, you’re doing the impossible. So here are the top benefits of travelling abroad.

  1. You can push back that horizon. Broadening your horizon sounds like a good idea, except if you’re afraid to do so. If you go outside of your house right now and you look towards the horizon line, keep pushing it back until you find a sunset at the end of it. That normal day-to-day routine might be comfortable, but pushing yourself out of that comfort zone and travelling can be everything that you need to truly feel a life.
  2. You’ll improve your health when you travel to new places. You don’t just sit back and enjoy the view, you get on your feet and you climb stairs to see the sights first hand and you climb up the side of mountains or you dive under the water to see the turtles. The physical activity that you do on a holiday is something so different to going to the gym. When was the last time you decided to take up salsa dancing lessons in the middle of Spain? When was the last time you climbed into a white water raft in the Canadian Rockies? Improving your heart health, boosting your muscle growth, and deep diving into physical activity in the new country is going to dramatically change the way you view your health.
  3. You have an opportunity to make new memories. One of the best benefits of travelling abroad is to make memories that will last you a lifetime. You’ll always remember the sights, the sounds, the tastes and the smells of being somewhere new. Tasting spaghetti in the middle of Rome or eating your first slice of Baklava in Greece is going to really change how you feel about food and the rest of the world.
  4. You get to meet new people. Expanding your social circle may not have been on your list when you booked your holiday, but it’s something you’re going to naturally do when you meet the locals. You might even meet your soulmate on the beach somewhere, although there are never any promises about that. The experiences that you have abroad are going to be a game changer.

I know what it's like to go from being a crazy backpacker without a care in the world, via being a vaguely sensible parent to being an adventurer once more. In other words, evolving into a Grown-up Traveller.

Like everyone else, I love to travel, have visited a lot of countries and all that but my big thing is Africa.

I also own and run The Grown-up Travel Company as a travel designer creating personalised African itineraries for experienced adventurers
